Homecoming 1983 was the genesis of the Morehouse College Benefit Golf Tournament. The Washington Metro Area Alumni annually sponsors a "Midnight Train to Georgia." In the wee hours of the morning on October 26, 1983, on the return leg of the trip, two Morehouse men were discussing, among other topics, the dearth of scholarship funds for students.

Tommy Johnson and Mac McCoy decided that they should do more to assist needy and deserving students at Morehouse. As both were avid golfers, the idea of a golf tournament was discussed. Believing the idea had merit, they discussed it with several alumni, among them Bill Bennett, also an avid golfer. Because the response was overwhelmingly positive, an annual benefit golf tournament  was born. The plan called for a format that would recognize the contributions of African Americans to the game of golf, a golf clinic that would introduce the game to novices, and a social function.  Seventy-six golfers participated in the first tournament which was held on June 23, 1984, at Lake Arbor Country Club in Mitchellville, Maryland. The tournament ran from 1984 to 1998.

Through the efforts of the Baltimore Morehouse Alumni Association, the spirit of the tournament was reborn via The Morehouse Golf Classic during the Morehouse vs. Howard "Nation's Football Game" on Labor Day weekend in 2011.  In 2012, the Baltimore Morehouse Alumni Association and Morehouse National Alumni Association DC Metro Area Chapter began collaborating in an effort to increase the potential of the tournament.

The vision of the Morehouse Golf Classic is to be a preeminent fundraising event for Morehouse College in order to produce future leaders that foster and sustain an inclusive, global civil society where justice is tempered by integrity, compassion, and courage.  The funds raised provide Morehouse students with funds for scholarship and financial aid that will enable them to benefit from the unique opportunities that Morehouse has afforded African American men since 1867. This is an excellent investment in the youth and in the future of our great country.  The 2016 Morehouse Golf Classic is the sixth installment of this inspirational collaboration between the Morehouse Alumni of Washington DC and Baltimore MD.  Since 2011 this event has raised over $50,000 and helped numerous students enroll, remain, and finish college. Funding has come from primarily from individual Morehouse Alumni and fellow supporters. We are looking for our very first major corporate sponsor!

We invite you to join us in our efforts to raise more money by growing this tournament by playing or making a generous tax deductible donation towards the event, as both the Morehouse National Alumni Association DC Metro Chapter and the Baltimore Morehouse Alumni Association are 501(c)(3) organizations.

MarTaze is a Senior Psychology Major with a GPA 3.0 cumulative GPA.  He was born and raised in Baltimore MD.  He is heavily involved on campus with organizations such as, the Glee Club (Public Relations Manager), NAACP (Chair of Political Action), and the student ambassador program.
